Shared interests

I find it easy to assume that everyone on my friends basically shares my views on everything. Indeed, I've seen it suggested that this is one of the bad things about internet socialisation: you never have to interact with anyone you don't want to, which can leave you with a too-homogenous world-view. Perhaps, then, it is good for me to be reminded we don't all agree. Some people's posts on the Olympics have done exactly this, leaving me with a curiousity that can only be satisfied with a poll:

I can't help but show an interest in Usain Bolt, a man who can jog faster than anyone else who has ever lived can run and therefore can't see a reason to run full speed in the running races.

Had to change my response, after He reminded me that Speedy Ready is still to compete in the BMX, so I'm going to take a proper interest in her final - after which I will revert to polite interest.

Bear in mind that as a household we take a serious interest in the England and Wales cricket team, which means that we have a lot of built up hatred and envy of Australian sporting prowess to be exorcised.

Have unlikely distant acquaintances involved; but haven't actually *watched* anything. I was touched and amused by John major this morning on R4 saying "It must be wonderful to be so young, so fit, representing your country abroad, andthen actually winning: marvellous" and then I wish his old-fashioned enthusiasm had been better directed when he was a politician.

In the sport itself quite little but am quite poor at resisting the one of us doing well factor. Even more I'd like to know how they do it. One gold in Atlanta, 20 in Beijing. Very statistically significant - is it drugs or training or motivation? Does this have implications for health or my ability to cycle to work or indeed to motivate myself to do anything? I don't know but I am prepared to read or watch a bit to find out.

Ditto. Don't normally give a flying fuck about spectator sport but the sheer novelty of the country bizarrely dominating some events has got me hooked. (I've even been watching cycling finals on my work PC - the shame, the shame!)

I was faintly interested in the discussion of how many calories a professional swimmer needs to ingest daily. I also am pleased that cycling is one of the sports Britain is doing well in, but mainly for political reasons—anything that raises the profile of cycling is doing some good for the nation]s health and the environment. Cycling is also a slightly cheaper aspiration-wise than Britain’s other Olympic sports, yachting and horsing. I am appalled and intrigued by the banning of all logos (other than sponsors’) to the extent of covering the name on urinals with a bit of tape. I have not yet felt the need to watch any of the footage.
